This is the hail pad that I put out on 5/08.14. I reported about 200 rice sized hail strikes on 5.8.14. Because I was afraid I would run out of hail pads, so I left the same pad out so I could record more over the weekend. I did not observe more hail strikes on the pad until 6:00 AM on 5/12. I took the frozen pad into the house at 6:00 AM and let it thaw, and immediately saw that a lot more hail must have fallen sometime during the night. In addition to some of the rice sized strikes left on 5/7, I saw about 100 strikes of 3/8 inch size and somewhat fewer of 1/4 inch size. I estimate that a total of 80 hail strikes occurred in the evening of 5/11 or the morning of 5/12 I am reporting those in the details printed above. It is likely that the hail fell in the evening of 5/11 because 12 inches of precip occurred in the form of wet snow during the night. If this snow had fallen late in the storm, the hail strikes would not have been as well defined as those that pummeled the hail pad. |
