| Very, very dry on trails. Humidity has been even lower than normal. Gusty winds with fire warnings. Perhaps the lack of moisture is what is causing many with allergies to be suffering this spring. Water levels at the nearby reservoirs are extremely low. |

| Soil under mulch or in shade is still moist. Weeds are doing great: prickly lettuce, downey brome, hoary cress, western tansy, blue mustard and kochia are all up, and some are blooming. |

| Recent steady rains of 4-5 inches the last 5 days are impacting soils and rivers. Many sump pumps here in town are running. Nearby rural fields have standing water in lower areas. Farm field rivulets have running water. Nearby Cedar River is about bank full. Nearby Wapsi River is just over banks in usual areas. Farm ditches have standing water. |

| Our ongoing extreme to severe drought continues in spite of the recent heavy rains that dropped 1,14" of precipitation a couple of weeks ago at my station. My year-to-date total stands at 1.46", which is 80% of normal. My water year-to-date total is 2.23", which is 53% of normal.
Last year my yearly precipitation total was 5.20", 2023 was 7.72" and 2022 was 11.54". 2021 saw 16.98" which was the last year that my yearly precipitation total was above average.
With the recent rains, some grasses are starting to green up, but overall, rangelands are extremely parched.
Widespread blinding dust storms dropping the visibility down to zero have hammered the area since February, along with several haboobs such as the one that moved in Carlsbad yesterday afternoon. Last photo. |

| Decided to do an interim CM report as conditions are worsening. April station rainfall through today, 4/24 is at 1.82" with only 0.03 since the mid-month report. Now about 1 inch below April climatology and 66% of normal. March was also quite dry at 1.65" or ~50% of normal. Water year (Oct. 1 to date) deficit at this site now about 4 inches (-3.96"), or 82% of NOAA normal for the period. The precipitation deficit is evident in local streamflows, many USGS gage sites showing below normal flows. The Roanoke River at Roanoke 7-day flow as of 4/23/25 was 193 cfs or the 11th percentile of all flows for the date (51% of median). Stages are falling and are well into the Below Normal category (10-24 precentile) and bordering on Moderate Hydrologic Drought (6-9 percentile). The only 'bright' spot is reservoir storage at Carvins Cove as of 4/15 which was at -1.1 feet below full pond (97.2% capacity) a -0.4 ft. change since 4/15 report. The US Drought Monitor (USDM) valid as of 4/22/25 continues to show D0 or Abnormally Dry conditions over nearly all of western and central VA with Moderate Drought expanding from the north and the south. Will maintain local Condition in the Mildly Dry category but just barely--there is a lot of warm season to go! April temperatures to date (1-24) are running warmer than normal (+2.6F) increasing ET demand and surface soils are very dry, plants require frequent watering. This will be my last CM report until late May, hopefully things get better while I'm gone! |

| MENOMINEE RIVER: Water depth is high compared to normal. 5.5' above normal. Some private boat docks are under water currently as well as the public ones if they are installed or never are removed. The water heightis over some of my neighbors' seawalls. Rain expected this afternoon only to add to the high river water-----Been getting frost in the mornings on and off ----- In the photos provided, the water is 16" away from going over the platforms. The trees photo shows the water 3' over the normal ground there. If I was to install my dock frame, it would be 32" under water currently. (those frame legs are tall). We have more rain coming mid to late morning and supposed to end mid afternoon. Undertow is strong. ----- Trails in the woods open on 4/25/25. |
