Notes: |
We were playing Mah Jongg indoors when we heard thunder and it got very dark. Then the rain came and we all got up to look out the windows. We realized that it was hailing as well, and the hail stones looked like diamonds in the rough! They were large and mostly uniform in size and color and roughly 1/2 inch diameter. The cores appeared white, but the bulk of each hail stone appeared clear. Although round, they were a bit irregular in shape. I can’t ever recall seeing such large hail stones. This location is about 8-10 miles from my station. When I got home, although there was about .30 rain in the rain gauge, they said no hail had fallen. The location of the hail episode was Hicksville, LI, NY, South of Old Country Road, North of Hempstead Turnpike and west of Levittown Parkway and east of Wantagh Parkway on Rim Lane. |
