Hail came in waves. 4:53 to 5:06 was mostly pea to dime size; Worse was at 5:00. Then at 5:25 to 5:28, larger hail fell, up to golf ball size. A last wave came at 6:06 and lasted up to around 6:25. Hail could be seen bouncing in the yard. It was rolling off the house roof making piles, up to 18 inches deep. At one time, the ground was white with hail covering. There was no snow, just rain along with it. A newly tilled large garden spot (70 ft x 100 ft was severely eroded due to slight slope. The next morning, piles of hail could still be seen around the house and even where it washed out of the garden. Strawberries and peas in the garden were shredded, along with leaves on the small magnolia tree in the yard. Rain gauge showed 3.60 inches of water, but I am sure there were a significant number of hail stones bounced out since the funnel was on it. An open bucket left out in the yard had 4.0 inches in it. The top diameter was 10.5 inches, with the lower diamet being 9.5 inches. It would have caught any hail that went into it. I do have some pictures of some individual hail stones as well as general outdoor pictures taken during the storm. Pictures of garden erosion were taken the next morning. It was a bad storm; glad all our vehicles were inside the garage. Heard some pretty hard pounding on the house roof by some individual hail stones; don't know the size of them, but it sounded bad. Unfortunately I had to leave just before the storm ended about 6:25PM, so I couldn't assess immediate situation, but had to wait until morning. |
